Oneida Community photograph collection, 1845-1982.

Portraits (1845-1910), stereographs (1865-1885), albums (1850-1982), and photographs (1860-1940) of the Oneida Community, its members, their descendants, activities, properties, businesses, and the landscape around Oneida, N.Y. The bulk of the collection dates from 1860 to 1930 and includes photographs taken by members of the Community. Later photographs focus on the Oneida Community Mansion House and Oneida Ltd. One series of photographs of Sherrill, N.Y. was taken ca. 1935 by Samuel Chamberlain. Includes stereographs of other subjects (such as The Acropolis) probably collected by Community members. Also includes twenty albums compiled by the Historical Committee of photographic prints of Oneida Community members and descendants, and Oneida Community Ltd. boards, agents, displays, and events.

The Oneida Community was a utopian commune founded by John Humphrey Noyes in 1848 in the town of Oneida in Madison County, New York. Noyes, born in Vermont in 1811, attended Dartmouth College, Andover Theological Seminary, and Yale Theological College and received his license to preach in 1834.
